11 December 1878.The British Government in South Africa presents ultimatum to King Cetshawyo's Indunas. The conditions of the Ultimatum were unacceptable to the Zulus and war broke out one month later. From Fort Pearson the British No 1 Column crossed the Thukela River to invade Zululand. Siege of Fort kwaMondi- Eshowe
Area 035 474 2281 22 January to 3 April 1879. Zulu forces under Prince Dabulamanzi besieged part of Col Pearson’s Column. British entrenched themselves around an abandoned Norwegian Lutheran Mission(kwa Mondi) and built earth fortifications - Fort Eshowe. Site Museum. Battlefield - Vryheid Area Tel:034 982 2133 ext 2229 28 March 1879. Hlobane Mountain. British attacked abaQulusi stronghold on Mountain but Zulu army arrived and British were forced to flee, many down Devil's Pass and others down Ntshenteka Nek, suffering heavy casualties. 20Km from Vryheid on Hlobane Road. Ulundi Battlefield - Contact tel: 035 870 2052 Situated adjacent to the Ulundi airfield, along the P700 (King Cetshwayo Highway) to Hluhluwe/iMfolozi Park. Entrance free. 4 July 1879. On the Mhlabatini plain across the White Mfolozi River. The final Battle of the War. The British advanced onto the plain and advanced towards the Zulu King’s capital, Ondini. The entire Zulu army then attacked the British Square and were driven off with heavy losses. On the road (P700) to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, just outside Ulundi. Open Daily. |
