Fort Durnford - Escourt. Tel: 036 352 3000
Erected shortly after the Langalibalele Rebellion to counter raiding San(Bushmen). Magnificent stone structure overlooking the town of Estcourt. Houses a fine museum. Toilets available.

Fort Amiel - Newcastle 034 315 3318. Constructed by men of the 80th Staffordshire Volunteers in 1876 prior to the annexation of the Transvaal. the Fort was used extensively in the Anglo-Zulu War and Transvaal War of Independence. Completely rebuilt in the early 1980's the Fort is now a museum. Open Weekdays 10:00 to 16:00

A superb, multifaceted museum featuring the history of the region from early times through the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer wars, the coal and glass eras, as well as farming and its daily life. King Cetshwayo's royal residence (reconstructed). Burned down after the Battle of Ulundi, July 1879, Open-air museum & Kwa Cultural Museum, 9km outside Ulundi towards uMfolozi / Hluhluwe Game Reserve. Toilets, Museum Shop and refreshments available. Baynesfield Museums

Nestled in the Natal Midlands the Baynesfield Estate, close to Richmond, was founded by Joseph Baynes in 1863. His beautiful Victorian house and adjacent museum has been restored and is open to the public by appointment. There is also a 14km hiking trail on the estate with overnight accommodation in a stone cottage using the original stone from the site of a cottage built by Baynes.
