Fugitives’ Drift Lodge, an award-winning destination, offers visitors an opportunity to experience the extraordinary saga of the Anglo Zulu War. Evident in every corner of Fugitives’ Drift is the Rattrays’ love of South Africa, its people and its unique history. The reserve offers a choice of accommodation, at the Lodge, the Guest House, or Umzinyathi Farmhouse. Both the Lodge and Guest House have spacious and luxurious en-suite cottages which all have private verandahs and broad views over the plains flanking the Buffalo River Gorge. The Lodge and Guest House also both have swimming pools set in their colourful, well established gardens, which are home to innumerable bird species. The Lodge houses a veritable museum, which is full of memorabilia, artefacts and relics pertaining to the Anglo-Zulu war and Zulu culture. In a stunning setting overlooking Isandlwana and the Buffalo River, the spacious Harford Library provides a contemporary venue for lunch, parties or simply to relax. The 15-mile river frontage on the Buffalo River Gorge also includes the graves of Lieutenants Melvill VC and Coghill VC who lost their lives saving the Queen’s Colour. As well as taking tours out to the Anglo-Zulu battlefields daily, Fugitives’ Drift is a natural heritage site and offers game viewing, walks, cycle tracks, and fly-fishing.
