203 | 10th January Onwards – Chieveley Area near N3/R74 junction
Retief arrived at this laager site on the 10th January 1838 with the cattle recovered from Chief Sikonyela and a meeting was held as to how they would be returned to Dingane. Eventually 70 volunteers left Doornkop on 25th January 1838 and headed for King Dingane’s capital Mgungundlovu on his ill-fated expedition.
A monument marks the site of the laager but the on-site information panels have been vandalised.
When I visited the monument it was in need of some tender loving care, the stones along the pathway required re-painting and the information boards where missing the grass around the monument was overgrown and needed cutting. Otherwise overall the monument was in good condition, nice site worth the trip.
when was it when you visited the monument?
